A Douglas Diaries begins the show. Then, a federal judge in Detroit is set to rule on a case brought by the American Civil Liberties Union regarding drivers being ticketed in support of anti-war protesters. The ACLU contends horn honking falls under the first amendment right to free speech. I contend it doesn’t as horns are loud, obnoxious, can deteriorate from the peace and serenity of an area, and likely are a traffic hazard. I am willing to bet the ACLU wouldn’t have brought the case if people were honking in support of the war.

- Hour 1

In the second hour, President Bush has announced a plan to stimulate the economy by giving families a tax rebate. This was done in 2001 and 2003 and was successful. Democrats, however, believe that the package is just another example of the President giving money back to the rich, and argue it’s not fair, wanting instead to give the money “the people who need it.” Making everything fair is a concept of socialism, and as far as life being fair, it isn’t, so get over it. Giving poor people money that they didn’t pay in the first place isn’t a rebate, it’s a handout, and subsequently won’t stimulate the economy. We have already learned giving handouts doesn’t stimulate anything. Keep in mind, everyone, including the poor, will benefit from a healthier economy as there will be lower interest rates, and more jobs which will translate to more money in their poor little pockets.

All this notwithstanding, there is a benefit to the poor already being discussed in the rebate plan, and that is to temporarily reduce the lowest tax bracket for the lowest earners from ten percent to zero.

A Douglas Diaries starts things out. Then, a little rant about parking enforcement, tickets, and why it should not be against the law, at least as it is in Pennsylvania, to write nasty messages in the memo line of your check when paying those tickets.

How about Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman’s comment regarding Tiger Woods? I didn’t think it was racist and don’t think she should have been suspended. We’ll talk about the word “lynch.” Also, hear from the dreaded Reverend Al Sharpton who isn’t helping race-relations in this country, but hindering them, and only to maintain his power and influence.

- Hour 1

Also along the lines of race, is the comment recently made by Hillary Clinton that it takes presidents like Lyndon Johnson to get it done (referring to the advancement of civil rights). The comment was attacked by the Obama camp, and it appears through a recent memo circulating through the campaign offices, they are all set to try to mimic Al Sharpton. This may be the first and last time I defend Hillary Clinton.

Then, Obama and his politics of hope and change are changing the poll numbers in New Hampshire where he now shows a considerable lead over Hillary Clinton. I would like to know what we’re all “hoping” for and what specific “change” is on the horizon? Are you hopeful we will all just get along? I’m not, but then again, I’m realistic.

Merry Christmas! A Douglas Diaries begins the show. Then, I’ll do my deconstruction of a ridiculous Susan Greene column in “The Sunday Denver Post.” Greene is upset because there are smells she deems unpleasant in the city of Denver. “It smells like a brown Christmas,” she proclaims. Well, I think it smells like another annoying Denver Post Columnist.

-Hour 1

In the second hour, the controversy over allowing high school girls to compete in wrestling against the guys is front page news in Denver this day. I’ll talk about the surrounding issues including the possibility of inappropriate touching, the humiliation of losing to a girl, and how boys are taught to deal with girls. I think when I’m done you’ll be convinced in states where there aren’t enough girls to support separate teams, we should allow them the opportunity to compete.

Then, another presidential hopeful, Mitt Romney, says he isn’t a flip-flopper. He defended his positions on NBC’s “Meet The Press.” I did some research on Romney and found him to be like a fish out of water.

- Hour 1

In the second hour, a 60 Minutes piece has me angered at the hypocrisy displayed by the Pentagon and military regarding the treatment of gays in the military. It’s “Don’t ask, don’t tell,” unless its wartime, in which case most everyone is willing to look the other way.

I’ll talk about the priorities of humans in general and especially those of soldiers in battle. Have you ever heard the saying, “Nobody is an Atheist in a bunker”? Well, as one caller put it, “Nobody is anything in a bunker.” Great calls punctuate this hour as well. I’ll also debunk some of the arguments against allowing gays to serve openly.

First, a Douglas Diaries. Then, I'll tell you the story of the University of Denver law clinic that is challenging the federal government regarding the treatment of a prisoner at Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado.

The inmate, Tommy Silverstein, has been incarcerated since 1975, and then was placed in solitary confinement in 1983, where he's been ever since, after killing a guard and two inmates.

Now, law students, who apparently can't find anything better to do, are trying to get better treatment for this convicted killer. If they win, I propose they have to guard him.

If you're inclined to feel sorry for this individual, you can read his impassioned plea at his website. If you're not inclined to sympathize with a killer, then you'll join me in hoping he rots away in solitary confinement where he's killed a total of 0 people since he's been there.

Finally, I knew Chuck Norris was tough. I didn't know that there's a whole bunch of internet gossip about just how tough he is. In fact, I'd say it's an all out internet war to come up with the slogan that best describes Chuck Norris. Here are some of my favorites.

A Douglas Diaries begins the show, and then it’s an open line segment. I’ve only done a handful of them in four years. Late night talk show callers sure make things interesting!

- HOUR 1

Then, in the second hour, I found that the World Toilet Association has kicked off its inaugural conference. I was perplexed by this and several questions come to mind about a so-called toilet association. Even more questions come to mind about toilets themselves. What are the people in this association doing? Toilets haven’t changed in years!

Then, a man is camping with his family and their dog. The dog is tied up to a tree outside the camper when it’s attacked by a mountain lion. The man saves his dog by shooting the mountain lion; simple enough. Now, The Sunday Denver Post front page story has some animal activists calling for the man’s prosecution.

Even if you are the biggest animal nut in the world, if the man doesn’t shoot the mountain lion, the dog dies. Therefore, either way an animal dies. You lose either way. How could you be upset about which one is killed? Is it because we should let the food chain take its course and the smaller, weaker dog should succumb to its fate? If that’s the case, then lets not forget, humans are at the top of the food chain, so we can kill the mountain lion.

Nevertheless, a person should be able to protect their pet from wildlife even if the family pet is in the wild. It sucks for the wild animal, but I guess if you’re a dog, it’s nice to have friends in powerful places.

A Douglas Diaries will begin the show. Then, more than 36 million licensed drivers on America’s roadways would flunk their written driver’s test if they had to take it today; that’s one in six of us.

How do you stack up? Don’t feel too bad, I’m a cop and my score was only 85%. I’m not so sure, however, they are asking the right questions?!

- Hour 1

In the second hour, we’ll talk about Evergreen Middle School’s new policy to prohibit “prolonged embraces.” According to school policy, the above is akin to sexual harassment. I don't velieve there's sexual harassment in middle school, and I don’t believe that hugs, no matter the length, can be offensive or inappropriate. If there is touching or rubbing going on, then that’s not hugging anymore- it’s fondling. If a couple is making out, then it’s no longer hugging- it’s making out.

I believe this is an asinine rule that is unenforceable, reactionary, and will only be counterproductive. If this new rule will accomplish anything, it will assure students will hug one another as long as possible, as often as possible, and do it to rebel against the new rule. If it is the truth the rule was enstated because some girls were feeling uncomfortable after being hugged for too long, then this rule does one other thing as well: It takes away the chance for a young lady to stand up for herself and say stop.

The president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, not only has asked to visit ground zero, but is going to speak at Columbia University. This is a man who has American blood on his hands, who is actively defying not only America, but also most of the world while he continues his quest to obtain a nuclear weapon.

I’ve got some sound from the 60 Minutes interview with Ahmadinejad. Not only does he not answer questions, but he lets something very important slip: He talks about “psychological warfare” and that’s exactly what he is engaging in by coming to America and being interviewed for television. Hear him as he panders to the American left. What we ought to do is arrest him and try him in a military tribunal for aiding terrorists. I realize that would be detrimental to world affairs, and would never happen, but imagine the storm that would cause!

First, a Douglas Diaries, and then O.J. Simpson is back in the news; he just can’t stay quiet can he? Preliminarily, it sounds like the police may have a tough time convincing victims to cooperate. Could this mean he gets let go? I will explain the exceptions to the “no victim no crime” rule. Plus, a discussion about karma: As much as it goes against my rational thought process, I can’t help but believe.

Then, presidential candidate Fred Thompson was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma back in 2004. It’s a rarely curable, highly recurring disease which, according to Thompson’s doctors, is in remission now. I wanted to talk philosophically about having someone ill in the oval office, how the symbolism of the presidency would make that difficult, and how even the best vice presidential candidate wouldn’t help.

There’s been some controversy about the so-called ‘squealer’ policy. Fans will now be able to text message complaints about other fans.

According to the Broncos new fan policy, rowdy, profane, or obnoxious behavior will not be tolerated. The crack down will undoubtedly see an increase in the number of people ejected, and season ticket holders could be revoked. I recognize that ball games aren’t church gatherings, but I’m also in favor of having recourse for the drunk, obnoxious jerk who is teaching your young children about the birds and the bees exclusively using four letter words.

Not only does he advocate for universal health care, but he would mandate preventative doctor visits for all Americans. Is this guy a dolt or what? I’ll discuss just a few of the many problems I see with his proposal.

Finally, a Douglas Show Case Study will tell you about the Connecticut manslaughter conviction of a lawyer who mistakenly thought a neighbor had molested his daughter. The lawyer then fatally stabbed the neighbor, and was recently sentenced to 12 years in jail. Is that enough? I don’t think so. I’ll talk about the larger problem of punishment in today’s society.

A Douglas Diaries begins the show and will include the mastermind behind unlocking the iPhone: a 17 year-old New Jersey kid. There’s even a video about it on You Tube.

Then, I would like to juxtapose two issues: Michael Vick and the war on terror. In particular, America’s outrage against Vick versus a criminal case in New York where the ACLU there is actually helping a convicted terrorist in order to get the President’s wiretapping program in front of another judge. Which is more important to you? Which makes you angrier? Are you worried about this nation’s priorities?

It certainly brings to mind this scene of A Few Good Men. There’s a great deal about that courtroom speech that’s true. I found a great re-enactment on You Tube. Check it out here.

In the second hour, a ridiculous proposal in Atlanta would make existing decency laws even stricter. The proposal is to outlaw those sagging pants or face up to $500 in fines or 6 months in jail. Proponents of the bill say it will make kids realize just how important their futures are; a job, I’m convinced, is for the parents. But ultimately, this decision can’t be made by city counsel or even a kid’s parents. It’s a decision that will be made by each child individually, and it’s called free choice. It’s what America is all about.

Now of course such a law, even if passed, will never make it past appeal. What it’s indicative of, however, is a larger problem in America: Legislating that other people conform to what a select few believe is right, and that’s just plain wrong.

In the first hour, I will enlighten everyone. I have found the problem with the world, and intend to rectify it. The realization came to me at a management seminar I attended this last week. No wonder the world is full of nannies. We are teaching the managers and leaders of America how to do exactly that.

Then...
In the second hour, immigration reform is working, and I have new evidence which suggests exactly that. One recent article would have you believe that reform, and in particular Colorado House bill 1023, has made it so the elderly blind no longer get their paper read to them, that homeless people are now pulling out their teeth with pliers, and that illegal aliens have not been affected. I can flatly dispute those charges, and offer proof that the measures taken in this country to stem illegal immigration, including house bill 1023, at least initially appear to be working.

What worries me is the underlying tone of these articles. There is a twinge of guilt and a sense of “shame on us” that accompanies these so-called news pieces. Allow me to demonstrate. Just click the podcast link under my picture and listen to the show!

She was treated and released from the hospital after an accident, and seen by medical staff after complaining of pain at the jail. They determined she needed no further medical treatment. She later died on, and now the story scapegoats the deputies when they have little, if any, culpability in this incident. I’ll explain why.

I’m not sure, but I am sure that condoning steroid use in the profession sends the wrong message: That the ends count more than the means. I’m not willing to be part of that message.

Finally, cops in Florida have a controversial way of apprehending illegal aliens. Although, I like the fact they are rounding up illegals, I'll talk about the importance of the tactics used in doing so. Their method is the equivalent of throwing dynamite into a lake to fish, and I think they could accomplish the same end, by a different means. Their actions are lazy and send a bad message.

Then, former Denver City Attorney Larry Manzanares committed suicide over the weekend. Some of his friends are blaming the Jefferson County district attorney’s office and the media for their scrutiny and releasing of documents. Can the media be held responsible for a suicide?

What do I think? I say no. One of the main purposes of the media is to expose corruption in government.

Then, the kiss was heard around the world. This photo was kept out of East Side High School in Newark, New Jersey. Despite the fact that Andre Jackson (featured in photo) paid $150 for the photo to appear, as did other couples, it was removed with a black marker from all distributed copies of the book. Other couples who paid the fee had their heterosexual kissing pictures left in the book.

I believe the school should apologize, reprint, and redistribute the book at their expense.

Finally, a discussion of talk radio’s influence is in the media again. Are you influenced by talk radio? The left is threatened by it since it is dominated by conservatives, but their opposition only draws more attention to it. Libs are giving power to a perceived threat.

Police raid a Desert Storm veteran’s home and charge him with a class 4 felony after finding he was cultivating marihuana. Did I forget to mention he had a medical marihuana license? We’ll get into the particulars of the case and you can decide whether or not society is better off without him on the street. I think choosing appropriate battles is an essential part of law enforcement, and this wasn’t one of them.

Finally tonight, a new study shows nearly three-quarters of people say they love their email so much, they would rather give up chocolate (54%) or coffee (50%) or TV (41%). Even though I find that TV one a bit tough to swallow, we’ll talk to David Shipley. David is a former speechwriter in the Clinton White House and is the deputy editor of The New York Times’ editorial page. His new book, “Send: The Essential Guide to Email for Office and Home” will be the subject.

But Jim Spencer doesn't acknowledge that, instead he would infer that all cops can't be trusted, and the only reason it worked was because there was video of the incident.

A Mother's Day wish...

I don’t remember the hours of labor or the endless diaper changes. I didn’t know what I was doing when I threw my spaghetti on the floor or cried all night long. My first memory of you is how you took care of me. Everyday, you fed me breakfast, lunch and dinner, all made with love. You made my owees all better just by inspecting them, and then administering a kiss. You taught me everything from how to walk and talk to minding my manners at the table.

After that’s over, it feels ungrateful to reach a certain age, salute with a brief thanks, and head out into the world. How can you repay someone who has dedicated and invested so many years of their life to you? It’s simple: just go out there, do what she taught you, and be the person she helped you become. That will show the world just what a wonderful woman your mother is.

But even with that, there will still be those days where nobody but a mother can make you feel better. Nobody but a mother can listen and tell you the truth. Nobody but a mother can take care of you. There’s nobody like a mother.

Thanks for everything mom.

Text messaging while driving may soon be against the law in New Jersey. This is an attempt to legislate against anything bad that might happen, and I'm against it. I don't like the way we as Americans create new government positions and/or legislation every time something bad happens. We have to realize that as long as there's people on this earth, there will be accidents, deaths, murders, violence, etc.

As an extreme example, if we made it illegal to drive, then we would save many millions of dollars in property damage and thousands of lives a year, but is it worth it? No.

Gas prices, gas prices, gas prices...What can we do about it? Nothing really. The only thing we can do, and this will take time, is hope that our collective outrage pushes science toward inventing an alternative energy source. if you ask me, that pressure is already nearing a maximum. This is still a capitalist society, not a dictatorship run by Conoco. Until then, gas prices are kind of like the weather: we can complain about it and that's about it.

Then, I'll talk about my car buying experience this week. Maybe some of the tricks I've learned will help you next time.

Also, a new test to determine the sex of a 6 week old fetus is here. Pro-lifers think this will make the abortion rate sky rocket. I doubt that.

Lastly, the Christian right would like to remove temptation from your children before they are born. At least one of their spokespeople would advocate hormone patches for unborn children which would "fix" what THEY consider to be sinful desires. What a bunch of nuts. Isn't temptation and desire a part of life? Doesn't how a person deals with those things define us as people? If we take away the human part of us, we will all end up becoming Stepford wives.

Who should be blamed more, Kim Basinger or Alec Baldwin? I think it should be Kim. Why isn't everyone outraged at this woman. She did more harm to that child than Alec did.

Then...

Everyone is trying to figure out just how it is to stop the next school shooting. This has to be boiled down to this basic dilemma: How do you stop someone who hasn't done anything yet?

This is a traditional dilemma in law enforcement, and it is the main one in the wake of the Virginia Tech shooting. Most of these assassins have little or no record until they go on a murdering rampage. If they do have a record, it's too minor to make a difference. So, unless you want to start jailing people for life for hate speech (starting with Alec Baldwin) then the focus should be elsewhere. I'll tell you where, and how this should be done.

Lastly, we'll hear from Denver Police Officer Phil Epple who turned around a crime ridden apartment complex in Denver after finding out that the problem was major cultural differences.

Forgiving Don Imus

Nappy-headed hos. Don Imus is under fire for calling the Rutgers University women’s basketball team just that.

Why?

Underlying in Imus’ observation was the humor of how hard-core girls lost a basketball game to a team of dainty pretty girls. One would think the team who looked tougher would surely beat the team who had pretty done-up hair, and appeared to care more about their makeup than about a good defense, regardless of the sport or the race of the players. Callers to my show on April 8, 2007 were trying to argue that these hard-working students, who were going to college, shouldn’t be called tough. However, it’s entirely possible, and I would argue desirable, to be tough and smart at the same time.

Nevertheless, I still don’t feel Imus’ comment is inherently racist. I know plenty of people with nappy hair and most of them are not black. I didn’t, nor do I now, associate that term as a derogatory term reserved strictly for African-Americans.

Hos

“Ho” is street slang, a truncation of whore. This slang term certainly is one that has its origins in African-American culture, but it is also a term that has been adopted by everyone else. I use this term all the time, not just to talk about hookers, and certainly not just to talk exclusively about blacks. I have even called by male friends who sleep around hos.

Those are my connotations, yours may be different and you may disagree-fine. That’s your prerogative.

The Double Standard

Cedric The Entertainer is an African-American comedian known for incorporating sporting events into his comedy. If he would have been a guest on any show anywhere and referred to the Rutgers women’s basketball team as nappy-headed hos, would he have been lambasted in the media? Of course not, and I’m willing to bet it would have been thought of as funny.

The fact that Al Sharpton and Reverend Jessie Jackson are in outrage mode about this makes me believe this is even more of a non-event than I had originally thought. After all, these two are typified by their demagoguery and racism against whites. Despite Reverend Jackson’s 1984 comments referring to Jews as "Hymies" and to New York City as "Hymietown" during a conversation with Washington Post reporter, Milton Coleman, he is apparently willing to forgive himself, but not others. Instead, he would have them grovel and beg for forgiveness on his radio show, and then ultimately call for them to be fired anyway, as is the case with Don Imus.

Everyone knows that African-Americans use the “n” word freely and without repercussions, whereas white people can’t use the word. I understand and agree with this somewhat. But, are we being told now that any language that came from the African-American culture is off limits now for use by anyone else? If you look at the larger picture, I believe the use of language from different cultures is a positive sign of racial integration.

Disputing allegations of hypocrisy

The reason that I didn’t support what Ann Coulter said about John Edwards, calling him a “faggot” was due completely to the setting. I made it perfectly clear that as a gay guy, it wasn’t the word that offended me. Coulter was addressing a bunch of students to talk about presidential candidates. It was certainly no morning radio talk show.

The bottom line

If African-Americans aren’t willing to have a conversation about these types of situations without calling anyone who disagrees with their viewpoint a racist, then race relations will never get anywhere. A wise man once said the fact black people can say certain things and white people can’t is just a reality of the world. I believe that as well, however there’s nothing to stand in the way of change. I bet he would have been made fun of on national television for his fame and fortune that followed! We'll use American Idol to talk about the larger picture of telling people what they need to hear. For example, telling someone they aren't a good singer. What kind of friend would you want, one that lies to you or tells you the truth?

I like being up-front and honest even if it's not what people like to hear. See the tryouts for Kenneth Briggs and Jonathan Jayne by clicking on their names. If they were your friends would you tell them what sexy singers they were?

Wait until you hear this story

It’s weeks like this that make it not worth being a cop. You go out everyday and put your life on the line, only to watch people get away with minimal consequences. Everyday people call you names, try to hurt you, swear at you, threaten revenge, and on and on, and it’s no wonder why this is commonplace. There are little or no consequences for these actions.

Let me tell you about a recent adjudicated court case where a Denver judge shows what is frankly a pathetic display of justice.

I pulled a woman over one day for having a temporary license plate that was folded over and couldn’t be read. This is common practice among people who have expired temp tags or are doing something else that’s not on the up and up. She also had a break light out. I was training a recruit at the time and he was driving.

The woman we pulled over was completely out of control. She got out of the car after we pulled her over, which isn’t allowed, but my recruit failed to order her back into her car. Instead, he let the woman come back to the window, poke her finger at him and begin asking why we pulled her over with questions punctuated by the “f” word.

I finally had to take over, since it was obvious my recruit wasn’t going to take charge, (and coincidentally, never learned how to take charge, quitting a month or so later).

I got out of the car and ordered her back into her car several times. Instead she yelled profanities as she refused my orders. She decided to get on her phone and began to place a call to God knows who. This is also a no-no since people routinely call friends and family to come assist them, which only complicates the situation when they show up and start interfering. When I told her repeatedly to put down the phone, she refused, and had to be forcibly handcuffed.

In her car were two puppies. I asked the woman, since she was going to jail if I could call someone to pick up the dogs and her truck so I didn’t have to put them all in the car impound. She told me, “F*ing take them.” She then called us “white bitches” and, while handcuffed in the back of the patrol car, threatened to kill me, my recruit, and my family.

Once at the station we tried to put her in the holding cell and, while taking her handcuffs off (she was facing away from us), she reared her leg back and kicked me in the shin.
The case went to court, and I testified, and the judge found the woman guilty of the following charges:

License plate violations
No Brake light
Disobedience to a police officer
Threats to injure a person
Assault

Want to know what her penalty was? Get ready…it’s a whopper. She got one year of unsupervised probation and a five hundred dollar fine, four hundred of which was suspended unless she gets in trouble within the next year.

Not to mention the insignificant traffic charges, this woman got a hundred dollar fine for threatening to kill two cops and my family and then assaulting a police officer. A speeding ticket can cost more money than that. Ah, American justice at its finest. I sure am proud to be a cop.

Here comes Mother Nature...Again!

As a human race, we try so vehemently to maintain control and gain power not only over our own lives, but also time, the future, and the past, other people, our environment, and even over the rest of the world. But despite cell phones, SUV’s, Mag Chloride, computer technology, nuclear weapons, and other leaps for mankind, we remain relatively weak and powerless. There is no greater reminder of this than when Mother Nature has her way with us.

We here in Denver are facing another possible blizzard, which comes in the wake of one of the ten biggest blizzards in our history. Twenty some inches of snow doesn’t sound like enough to incapacitate a city, but it is. Being trapped at home hardly makes mankind feel in control. Finally making it to the store only to find there are no eggs or milk for sale also creates an uneasy feeling in the bottom of one’s stomach.

After watching the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, I can’t help but feel like we are teetering back and forth between complete anarchy and martial law. If you ask me, as destructive as the human-race can be, my sense is we won’t be the catalyst for this result, but that Mother Nature will be using her hand to shove us over the edge of civility. Of course this snowstorm won’t result in street gangs, raping, and pillaging, but it’s a reminder of just how vulnerable and fragile our lives are. It’s also a reminder that although most of us come to the rescue and assist our elderly neighbors or help complete strangers get out of a snowdrift, in many there lurks a caged animal that once given the opportunity is ready to take what they want.

Our first guest is the founder and CEO of Iraq War Veterans organization. He will talk about his experiences as a veterans' advocate.

Then, Major Douglas Bryan will join us. He was in Iraq and suffers from PTSD. Hear how it's changed his life.

Finally, Andrew Young will talk to us. Mr. Young is a clinical social worker and he will tell us the signs, symptoms, and treatment of PTSD.

Extortion for Forgiveness

When I first heard of Michael Richards, AKA Kramer’s racial tirade I was disgusted. I thought that he must be a stone’s throw away from a straight jacket and a padded room. I also thought it likely that he got a little carried away with an 8-ball before his act began. Then I began to wonder, is he a racist?

I don’t condone what Richards said or did but I reflected on the many times that I’ve been cut off in traffic by some over-weight person and yelled out to them from behind my steering wheel, “You fat ass.” This certainly doesn’t mean I inherently hate or have a prejudice against obese individuals. I’m sure there are those that do, but it’s most likely a minuscule percentage.

I thought of other times when I’ve mumbled, “stupid bitch” to a woman who didn’t start writing a check before all of her groceries were rung up, but I’m not a misogynist. Certainly there are women-haters in the world, but again, I would wager it’s a very small percentage of the population.

Many other examples of name calling come to mind where I’ve thought or called someone a name based on a physical attribute, but I certainly don’t hate everyone who embodies that characteristic. My words are an expression of anger based on obvious visible characteristics of the person annoying me.

There is a definite distinction between name calling and sweeping, condemning generalizations about a group of people. For instance, Mel Gibson’s statement that Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world is wholly different then plain old name calling. So, is Michael Richards a racist? I don’t know. Only he knows the answer to that.

I then thought of the victim’s in this case, and although I felt sorry for them and the fact that they were victims of what appears to be racism. I wondered why there was no outrage for their verbal retaliations calling Richards a “cracker-ass.” Some may argue that the words condemning white people are laughable, but the meaning of words comes from within. I get called all kinds of names and when it happens, I chalk it up to childish name calling. Whatever happened to sticks and stones? African-Americans tell me that the n-word brings up memories of a painful history, but I don’t see agony in audiences when comics and rappers repeat the slur over and over.

Nevertheless, I acknowledge the assimilation of the African-American has no doubt been difficult, so I’m more inclined to exude sympathy for an instance of name calling that is of a racist tone. My sympathy stops though as soon as the victim’s started asking for money. MSNBC reported the men don’t just want an apology, they want compensation.

Suggestions were made that Richards pay a half million dollars to charity for each instance he used the n-word, and that’s patently ridiculous. It’s extortion for forgiveness which even if the money is paid, wouldn’t be granted.

Michael Richards has undoubtedly injured his career, embarrassed himself, apologized profusely, offered little excuses, and solicited the help of black leaders to make amends to the people he offended. In the end, the damage is done, and money won’t relieve the victim’s trauma nor will it repair Richard’s reputation. For me, the lesson is simple: Sometimes in life people can be mean and things aren’t always fair. We don’t live in Utopia, racism does exist, and we aren’t all going to always get along, but we take the good and the bad and we do what we’re supposed to: move on.

Originally, my show was shortened to an hour because of the Bronco's game. Then, the coverage ran late, so it was reduced to a half hour show which wouldn't have been so bad if they hadn't lost.

So, I was the transition guy back to regular programming, and I thought it important (because I know how hard Bronco fans take losses) to cheer everyone up.

Therefore, I'll start with my Douglas Diaries, and then tell you about one of the crappiest days I've had in a while. Nothing cheers people up better than another's misery! Congratulations, You’ve Just Won $500,000!

A couple weeks ago I held a press conference here in Denver to get the word out about lotto scams, but the media literally covered the story in less than 30 seconds. They neglected to mention 99 percent of what I said, didn’t explain the scam very well, and didn’t use very much of my pretty mug on the television.
So, for the benefit of people who might fall victim to this, here’s how the scam works:

You are mailed a letter, some more official looking than others, telling you that you have won a sweepstakes, lotto, or other drawing. Accompanying the letter is a check, again some more official looking than others. The check is to advance you the money you will need to send to pay for the “processing fee” or “taxes” associated with your winnings so you don’t have to pay with your own money. This check is usually around $3,000. You are to deposit the money in your account and then call your claims representative.

Here’s what will happen when you call:

You will be told that you have been given the money out of your winnings and that since you deposited the money in your account, you now have the money to pay the fees. You will be asked to wire money to Canada or to Nigeria or some other place overseas. A couple weeks later, your bank will call you and tell you that the check you deposited is a fake. You will discover soon that you can’t get your money back after you’ve wired money overseas, and you’ll be out few thousand dollars.

Why this works:

First and foremost, people are greedy. They believe that they have finally got their big break. A woman began this same old story on the phone to me the other day, and then interrupted her and played out the scenario above. She was surprised I knew what all had happened to her without her having explained it to me. Even after I went through this, I told her it was a scam and she didn’t win anything. All she could tell me was that I was wrong and she was sure she had won because she deserves it and, “They told me I won.”

The other reason why this works is because it preys on people’s hopes and dreams. Think of how you feel after buying a Powerball ticket: you spend the next hour daydreaming about how you will spend your winnings, who you will give money to and how much each person will get. You spend time thinking things like, “Aunt Martha isn’t getting a dime, maybe then she’ll wish she would have sent me a bunt cake at Christmas.” Now imagine you’ve been told that you’ve won half a million dollars. Your common sense goes right out the window. Remember what your mother taught you, “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.”

Failed Elections

Congratulations Colorado! We’ve succeeded this mid-term election in dooming the state economy, supporting discrimination against American citizens, and helping push America toward a loss in the war on terror.

Let us begin with the Colorado economy which will suffer greatly now thanks to a minimum wage hike that is permanently connected to inflation. It shouldn’t be long now until the minimum wage is around $15.00 an hour (I give it 10 years). That might be fun for the majority of minimum wage workers: Little Johnnie, the full-time student, who lives at home with his parents and has a part time job at Blockbuster, but it won’t be good for the rest of Colorado. It’s long been shown that raising the minimum wage is a poor way to fight poverty. It will also result in an increased unemployment rate and a decreased number of entry level jobs.

But let’s move on. Not only was marriage already defined in Colorado by state statute as a union between a man and a woman, but civil unions for homosexual couples didn’t exist either. After the election what do we have? Marriage is now constitutionally defined as a union between a man and a woman (as if that were necessary), and civil unions for gay couples still don’t exist.

I am willing to concede to the masses the traditional definition of marriage, despite the fact I think it’s ridiculous. If mainstream America wants gay couples to call their relationships another name, they should agree, take what they can, and not complain. That’s exactly what was given to the voters and then denied. Remember all those polls where the community at large has long said that they oppose gay marriage, but wouldn’t mind civil unions? It would appear that was all talk, since voters were asked to put out or get out, not only did Colorado get out, but everyone started running the other way. Now gay people in Colorado will have to continue to hire attorneys and file court documents just to be entitled to the same benefits heterosexual couples are allowed, like hospital visitation. I guess discrimination of people based on who they fall in love with is now the benchmark in Colorado.

Lastly, it will be interesting to hear what democrats actually have planned for the war in Iraq. They’ve been pounding their fists for a change in strategy, but don’t seem to have any answers. This is the equivalent of the following:

You: “I don’t wanna go to McDonalds. I hate McDonalds. It’s not healthy, it’s too greasy, and the selection sucks. I think we should eat somewhere else.”

Your Spouse: “Alright. Where do you want to eat?”

You: “Um…I don’t know.”

People say that it’s black and white to insist “cut and run” or “stay the course” are the only two options, but they are. Call the two strategies what you will, the ideas behind them are very obviously the only two available choices. “Stay the course” doesn’t mean we can’t try new tactics and adapt to a war, it means we don’t leave until the job is done. Now, Democrats will hasten the withdraw of troops from Iraq which will embolden the terrorists and hand them a victory, sounds like cut and run to me. What does it say when Osama Bin Laden and other terrorists approve of our shift in power?

Then it's the shame game...

What a shameful week in American history. I'm not going to relive all the feigned outrage of the John Kerry Remarks or the gay, drug-buying reverend, but I will talk about the circus surrounding both of these events. I'll point my disapproving finger in shame.

1) Shame on John Kerry for calling our troops stupid, not apologizing, and then lying about what was supposed to be said. His excuse was as good as saying, "I didn't swear. I said you were full of spit."

2) Shame on a male prostitute for being a prostitute, and if not selling drugs directly, then telling where to buy them. Shame on that same person for doing eight million interviews and then claiming he never meant to ruin the reverend's life.

3) Shame on the Reverend Ted Haggard for being a hypocrite.

4) Shame on the media for putting the reverend's wife and kids on the front page of the newspaper.

5) Shame on all of the public who couldn't get enough of it.

Then...

Even the death sentence of Saddam Hussein is being used as a political ploy with the left alleging that the Bush administration is behind the timing of this. Give me a break.

Smoking On Stage Decided By One Man

I’ve often maintained that the most powerful people in this country are judges. That power may be diminished a bit if a court is comprised of a panel of judges, but often times even that situation results in excess power. Say for instance one of the political parties governs a state for several years, it's then the court becomes loaded to one side of the spectrum. This situation may not empower one person alone, but it certainly does empower an ideology.

Decisions by some one judge courts often seem capricious and illogical, and I often wonder if the wind was blowing the other direction on a particular day, if the decision would have been the opposite. For example, Denver District Judge Michael Martinez has ruled that there will be no exception to the smoking ban for on-stage theater performances in Denver. Denver theater owners had challenged the recently passed Colorado smoking ban seeking an exception.

Even though I was against the smoking ban in principal, I supported it for selfish reasons. I work at bars often in an off-duty police capacity, and occasionally enjoy going out. I weighed my belief that government shouldn't regulate private business against my comfort and non-smoking preference (and not having to shower before bed after going to a bar), and my comfort prevailed.

Nevertheless, as one who enjoys the theater, and doesn’t enjoy smoke, I for one am irked that actors and actresses will be relegated to smoking fake or talcum powder cigarettes which don’t look real and will detract from the overall performance. The judge said that the smoking ban serves a public health interest and that smoking is not inherently expressive.

The smoking ban does serve a public health interest for workers and patrons who are cramped in a bar with hundreds of people chain smoking for hours on end. It isn’t a public health risk to have one person out of hundreds or even thousands smoking while on a stage in a ventilated theater. Furthermore, theater is inherently expressive. That includes the entire performance right down to the props. So, there’s a strong argument smoking is expressive when it’s done as part of a plot or for character enhancement in a theater production. Would John Wayne have been regarded as such a stud if he were sucking on a candy cigarette?

Apparently, the line for the women’s restroom just got longer anywhere where the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority has a bathroom. The court ruling comes after a 70-year-old transgender telephone repair technician was arrested for using the woman’s bathroom. Now people are allowed to use whichever restroom is “consistent with their gender expression.”

Once the initial shock fades of having someone of the opposite sex in your bathroom, I’m not sure who would have a problem with this ruling. Let’s think about the actual mechanics for a moment. I’m not an expert on women’s restrooms, but I would assume most women have a bathroom stall as their only option. Women aren’t privy to the experience of peeing in long troughs next to each other like men are. The privacy factor is just higher. Therefore it is fairly unlikely that women will actually be exposed to one of these people.

On the other side, if a woman who is a man went into the men’s bathroom, no matter how many manly the traits that person has adopted, they are still missing the main member that would allow them to stand next to other men and pee into a urinal.

One of the people interviewed for this story said that she was just uncomfortable going to the bathroom next to a man. Well, join the club. There is nothing more uncomfortable for me than to have to go number two next to a man even if we are in completely secluded stalls. There just isn’t anything fun about hearing someone else’s evacuation or knowing they can hear yours. I usually plug my ears and softly hum a comforting tune.

Another rider fears that predators might dress as women and lurk in the women’s restroom. Based on my experience with the law, I would assume that even after this ruling, going into the opposite gender’s restroom for some sort of sexual gratification would still be illegal, and unless some “predator” is able to camouflage themselves between the tank of the toilet and the walls, this endeavor would prove to be fairly fruitless.

Keep in mind that about 2 percent of the American public is transgender, and they don’t have to go to the bathroom every minute of everyday. In other words, the chance you will have to deal with this is very low. On the off chance you do have to do this, it won’t be a daily occurrence. I don’t understand the transgender community, and to be honest, they make me uncomfortable, but if you think it’s strange to go to the bathroom with one of these people, imagine how strange it would be to walk around everyday feeling like you were the opposite gender.

It appears that Iceland has broken a twenty year whaling ban and decided to kill a fin whale.

Why did I show you a picture of this? Am I against killing whales? I don’t know. As soon as I saw the picture, I thought about the big beautiful beast being harpooned to death for no reason whatsoever. After all, I don’t eat whales. I wanted revenge for whomever it was that killed this thing. I wondered what anyone would do with a dead whale. Do people eat it? Are clothes made out of the skin? I’ve never seen a McWhale sandwich at the drive through.

It’s funny: my views on hunting vary depending on my perception of the animal. If the animal is majestic, beautiful, or one that I would pay money to look at from a ship, I think it should be entitled to live. If, on the other hand, the animal is ugly, serves no purpose (at least in my mind), or is one that tastes good, I ask for seconds.

I suppose the only reason I’m not throwing myself in front of harpoons to save the whales is because I recognize my feelings for what they are, well that and I already have enough to do. I suppose if it came to some sort of vote or I had an opportunity to sign a prewritten letter to a congressman, I might let ‘em have it. Until then, I’ll do what the majority of people will do: try not to look at pictures of dead whales, try to forget the pictures I’ve seen, and hope they aren’t still endangered.

I wanted to talk a while in the first hour about gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez's response to an allegation that his office used illegally obtained material to put the smear on his opponent. Beauprez called the man who broke the law to get the information a "hero" but also said he must be prosecuted if he broke the law. Contradiction? I think so.

Then...

Coloradans face two issues in November's vote. One of them is Amendment 43 which defines marriage as only between one man and one woman. Although I am not in favor of this amendment, I think its passage is likely. Referendum I on the other hand establishes domestic partnerships and is drawing equal ire. I thought as long as gays called it something besides marriage everyone would be happy, but I guess not. I expect Referendum I to pass, and I'll tell you why.
